Edition Originale de la thèse de médecine du chimiste et homme politique français Pierre Auguste Adet (1763-1832), qui fut notamment l'un des proches collaborateurs de Lavoisier avec qui il publia la célèbre "Méthode de Nomenclature Chimique" en 1787, et qui était le secrétaire des "Annales de Chimie" à leur fondation en 1789.

Very rare First Edition of this dissertation on the skin disease called "plica", affecting the hairy leather. The author is most probably the German writer Johan Agricola (1589-1643), who is responsible for several publications on surgery. Occasional water stains.

First Edition of Ioannes Guinterius’ translation of the works of Alexandre de Tralles.
Alexandre de Tralles "was the only one of the Byzantine compilers who displayed any special originality... His account of insanity, gout and the dysentery and choleric disorders are above the average. He has a highly original chapter on intestinal worms and vermifuges, is said to have been the first to mention rhubarb, and first recommended colchicum (hermodactyl) in gout" (Garrison).
Alexandre de Tralles placed special importance on dietetics and his work contains numerous chapters on nutrition.
The end of the volume features a translation of the Arab doctor Rhaze's treatment for the plague.
Jean Gonthier d’Andernac (1505-1574) the German doctor and humanist was a distinguished Hellenist. In 1525 he moved to Paris where he spent time in the company of Budé, Lascaris and the cardinal of Bellay. His translations of the Greek doctors of antiquity are reputed. This first version of Alexandre de Tralles appeared in Strasbourg and was reprinted many times.

The best edition of this classic publication, "his principal work" (Garrison, History of Medicine, p. 417).
The father of Dermatology in France, Baron Alibert (1768-1837) was the first person to describe several skin diseases (mycosis, Alep's pustule, etc.) and was responsible for several new terms, such as " Dermatoses" which lends this book its title. In addition the famous "tree of the Dermatoses" appears here for the first time, providing a classification of skin diseases.
Illustrations account for one foldout engraving (tree of the Dermatoses) and 8 lithographed engravings in colour.

Edition Originale de cet important mémoire lu à l'occasion du débat qui opposa, à l'Académie de Médecine de Paris, les partisans de la statistique médicale et ses détracteurs.
Benigno Juan Isidro Risueño d'Amador (1802-1849) était un médecin espagnol, né à Cartagena (Murcia) et professeur à la faculté de médecine de Montpellier; il fut l'un des premiers défenseurs de l'homéopathie en France, et c'est lui qui prit la tête du mouvement contre l'emploi des probabilités en médecine, dont cet ouvrage recueille les arguments en faveur de "la méthode inductive".
"La théorie dite des probabilités semble renfermer des difficultés et des contradictions logiques peut-être insolubles, même dans la spéculation mathématique pure".

First Edition published by the great printer and scholar Guillaume Morel (1505-1564), of the Latin translation of the work of two of the greatest Greek doctors of the beginning of the Christian era: Aretée de Cappadoce and Rufus d'Ephèse.
The Italian doctor Giovani Paolo Crasso is responsible for this translation which was published in Venice two years earlier.
While editing these texts Guillaume Morel added some comments and critical notes concerning Crasso's translation. They appear at the end of the volume under the title: "Annotationes locorum, qui in Aretaei Codice Graeco, ab interpretatione Crassi discrepant, autore G.M.T. (Guillaume Morel de Tilleul).
Some waterstains at the end of the volume, but quite a good copy, in its original binding.

First Edition of this work on astrology from the Italian mathematician Andrea Argoli (1570-1657). It is illustrated with an engraved title page showing the portraits of Tycho Brahé and the author. Numerous astrological diagrams also appear in the text.
This work offers an interesting fact about Harvey, in that it contains an early reference to the discovery of blood circulation (1628), which was analysed by Walter Pagel in his "William Harvey, biological ideas", in which the title page of Argoli's work is reproduced.
Lower edge of the boards slightly worn down. Good copy.

Between 1761 and 1765 Astruc published his famous "Traité des maladies des femmes" which Garrison-Morton considered "the most pretentious gynaecologic work of the eighteenth century... chiefly useful for its historical orientation". This "Art des Accouchements" is a sort of complementary text, with an educational purpose in mind. In the preface he stated that if he managed to give a basic treaty on the art of delivering a baby that was within the grasp of midwives, he would be happy.
Browning. Quite a good copy, well bound.
